ash loved her dorm. maybe it wasn't the neatest in the school, and maybe the mini-fridge broke more than a few of the rules, but that made it feel more homely. her family's apartment was less than half an hour's drive away, but there were eight of them living in a four bedroom flat. ten until tara and dane moved away. who wouldn't want their own space? besides, she saw them every now and then. she was a big girl now anyway, she could stand some time alone. but there were some downsides as well. it smelt like a weird mix of paint, alcohol and pee, since her roommate brought her puppy in a for a visit, and there were some questionable stains on the carpet. besides, ash had been on her laptop lying on her bed for hours and now her elbows were sore. it was time, she decided, to get the hell out of there.
she opened the mini fridge and shoved a chocolate bar in her pocket, then opened the door and slipped out into the hallway. it was hard to imagine how she could've felt so lost and daunted on her first day here - now she knew this place like the back of her hand. better, even. within minutes she was in the library, surrounded by huge carved bookshelves and perfectly clean carpet, for a change. the only thing wrong with this place was that there was way too much choice. ash was a gemini, and although she didn't believe in all that astrology crap, she certainly found it impossible to make choices.
she grabbed the chocolate bar out of her hoodie pocket and took a big bite. food was banned in the library, but what the hell. the librarian was snoring loudly behind the desk, so ash figured it was okay. she ate it as she searched the shelves, running her finger along the spines of all the books in the fiction section. reading was one of ash's favourite hobbies. she'd tried writing something every now and then, but she always lost confidence and stopped after the first few pages. her favourite writers were better than she'd ever be. she preferred to sing her words - that was where she really excelled. still, she loved how books could take you away from your crappy little world and put you in theirs, where there was nothing but action and adventure.
